Common Medical Errors

Mistakes Lawyers Know Arizona Doctors Make

According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, over 225,000 people die each year due to medical malpractice. As hospitals become more overcrowded and large HMOs rush more patients through, the errors only become more common — and more severe.

Thousands of people each year find their lives permanently changed by a serious doctor error. They lose limbs, experience chronic pain, have conditions worsened and treatments fail. Some are even killed by a doctor's negligence.

Many people put trust in a doctor's help only to find that the doctor was incompetent, with a history of negligence. This negligence can take many forms:

  • Doctor misdiagnosis: When doctors diagnose a condition incorrectly, they waste valuable time treating the wrong condition. Sometimes doctor misdiagnosis leads to treatments do more harm than good, including causing pain and irreversible side effects. Other times doctor misdiagnosis means that the real cause of the pain is never treated.
  • Failure to diagnose: Sometimes doctor errors result in failure to diagnose. When test results were switched or when your doctors did not meet the standard of care, it may be possible to hold them legally accountable for their actions. In a country where fewer and fewer people have access to reliable healthcare, failure to diagnose is a growing problem.
  • Medicine or pharmaceutical error: Doctors frequently prescribe the wrong medicine or medicine in the wrong doses. Other times, it is the pharmacist who makes the mistake. The wrong drugs can cause pain and severe side effects, but they can also prevent life-threatening conditions from being properly treated.
  • Surgical error: Some of the most significant surgical errors are operation on the wrong body part or patient, leaving surgical instruments in the body cavity and failure to diagnose or treat a post-operative infection.
  • Birth injury: Birth injuries can have long-term effects on the infants they harm, including permanent mental and physical impairments. When your infant has been injured in a birth accident, it can be critical to work with an experienced attorney.
